Today I met Judithe Hernandez, an artist who has painted some of the most significant murals in Los Angeles, including Recuerdos de Ayer, Sueños de Mañana, above, from 1981. Along with Kent Twitchell’s Victor Clothing Co. mural of a bride and groom, there is no greater symbol of L.A. to me. Unfortunately, this particular mural no longer exists (the building was demolished in 2002), but it was amazing to be able to chat with Judithe about art, Chicano politics and the L.A. of the early ’70s. I coulda spent all day hearing stories…
